The most important thing when you break down is for you and your family to stay safe! The most dangerous place to break down is on a busy highway. Follow the tips below to remain safe should you find yourself in this situation:

1. Safety First:

  • Stay Calm: Avoid panic and focus on getting yourself and others to safety.

  • Turn on Hazard Lights: This alerts other drivers to your disabled vehicle.

  • Pull Over Safely: If possible, guide your vehicle to the right shoulder or an area away from traffic.

2. Keep Yourself and Others Safe:
  • Stay in Your Car: Especially on a highway, staying in your vehicle is safer than getting out to assess the damage or fix a problem.

  • Buckle Up: Keep your seatbelt fastened while waiting for assistance.

  • Consider Popping the Hood: This can signal to other drivers that you need help.

  • Exit Safely: If you need to exit the vehicle, do so on the side facing away from traffic.

3. Call for Help:
  • Roadside Assistance:
Call your roadside assistance provider or insurance company's roadside assistance service.

  • Emergency Services:
If you're in immediate danger or can't find a number for roadside assistance, call 911.
